The Beatles spread the use of the electric guitar across the world and Bolivia was no exception. The “British Invasion” hit a politically convulsed country and fell upon a rich multicultural scene that expanded even further when psychedelic counterculture youth movements coming from San Francisco also conquered the hearts of the country’s young people. It was a great mix of influences thrown into a cauldron that saw a link between the LSD-soaked hippie generation and the country’s native ancestors. Bolivians were not new to mind-expanding experiences; the acid experiences pioneered in the US by Ken Kesey and Timothy Leary found their local counterpart in ancient indigenous traditions of using plants such as ayahuasca to open the doors of perception. In this compilation you will find some of the most interesting young bands from 1960s Bolivia who brought the sounds of a new generation and combined them with the country’s rich musical background. The psychedelic, garage-sounding beat created by these young musicians would soon open up new horizons, and Bolivia would soon see traditional sounds, such as its local version of cumbia, evolve in a similar way to how it would in neighboring Peru.
