By the time *Pyramid* was recorded, the Modern Jazz Quartet had become a jazz institution, yet they never lost their creative spark; their performances—even when revisiting classics like “Django” or “Vendome”—remain thoroughly stimulating, spirited, and fresh. John Lewis served as director of the Lenox School of Jazz from its inception in 1957 until it closed in 1960. It was during his teaching tenure at Lenox in 1959 that the Modern Jazz Quartet began recording the sessions that would result in *Pyramid*. The album—one of the group’s finest—was completed during sessions held in New York on December 21, 1959, and January 15, 1960.
