The birth of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) in Chicago was a significant cultural event in the late 1960s. As its name suggests, it was a group of artists who prioritized originality, and multi-instrumentalist composer Anthony Braxton was one of the most prominent figures in its ranks. For the next 50 years, he would prove bold and adventurous in his concepts and interpretations, and B-X0 NO 47A remains a classic title in his vast discography. On the album, Braxton led a group that included other AACM members; trumpeter Leo Smith (before he adopted the name Wadada); drummer Steve McCall; and violinist Leroy Jenkins. However, the wide range of instruments used in the session meant the small group had a powerful sound. From bells and stems to harmonicas and darbukas; as well as the intriguing “sound machine” allowed the quartet to create a unique textural palette. Braxton and his colleagues were destined to become key figures in the avant-garde movement, or the ‘New Thing,’ which broke with the prevailing conventions of the jazz industry. Restored and remastered from the original master tapes, this premium B-X0 NO-47A edition offers the chance to experience Braxton’s singular vision like never before, as well as the invaluable chemistry between him, Smith, Jenkins, and McCall. They composed historic music that has endured throughout history.
