In spring 1971 Hal Singer, who had recently moved to France, recorded, with some local musicians (Jacques Bolognési, Jean-Claude André, Siegfried Kessler, Patrice Caratini and Alain Charlery) and his friend Art Taylor one of the key albums in his discography: Blues And News. Going back to the roots of jazz, the saxophonist has a party with swing, rhythm and blues, soul and funk – a party sometimes gate-crashed by Kessler’s intrepid chords – but which all celebrate one and the same thing: the saxophonist’s unconditional ‘joie de vivre’.
