Guyanese Afro-Folk band The Yoruba Singers formed in Georgetown, Guyana in 1971. Despite their name, they were not from Nigeria but identified strongly with the area, music and culture. Finding further influence in the folk music born out of plantations, traditional and religious songs, rocksteady and roots-reggae coming from Jamaica, and Calypso and steel-band culture from nearby Trinidad and Tobago. Their 1974 debut ‘Ojinga’s Own’ showed the evolving sound of The Yoruba Singers, taking their basic flute and drum sound and beefing it up to fit in with the then contemporary jazz-funk, setting a new standard for originality and sophistication for Guyanese popular music
