Punk came and went quickly. By the late ’70s, those who were in the throes of it had already considered it passé. A blanket term like “post-punk” simply means that there were as many ways to follow the punk rock movement as there were bands active. Joy Division was but one sliver of that pie, shining a blacklight in a darkened corner to illuminate the possibilities and the grime. To anyone still entertaining the idea that Joy Division were just another British band that got lucky, Preston 28 February 1980 punctures another notch in the belt for the opposition. Seeing them must have been an event.
