Fabrizio De André, Lucio Battisti, Francesco De Gregori, Francesco Guccini, Giorgio Gaber... these are probably the first names that come to mind when one thinks of the singer–songwriters who made history in the Italian popular music. Among these, unfortunately, Claudio Lolli has always occupied a more marginal role, a treatment he didn’t deserve given the undoubted quality of his work.
"Aspettando Godot" is Claudio Lolli’s full–length debut on EMI label, sponsored by his friend Guccini. Only the cover, depicting an Italian 5000 Lire banknote of the time with the artist drawn in place of the original Cristoforo Colombo, is an original ’business card’; together with the title, stolen by Samuel Beckett’s homonymous play, it becomes a declaration of intent: to tell the absurdity and contradictions of those years’ society and of life itself, with personal and current references rather than generic or philosophical ones. Those written by Lolli are practically little poems, sung on acoustic guitar arpeggios and classical music accompaniments. Not bad for a boy who was only 22!
Reissue faithful to the original with gatefold cover, on coloured vinyl.
